About Us

Lab Langban International School is an authorised International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) school. It is located in a well-populated residential area in Sangweuy Village, Sisattanak District, Vientiane Capital, Laos PDR. The school offers a high-quality educational experience for preschool and primary school aged students by creating a safe, stimulating and nurturing environment for children to develop their skills, confidence and independence. This unique learning approach helps to bring all aspects of a child’s learning together in a holistic way, involving teachers, parents and the world around the child.

At Lab Langban, we're building a truly global family of learners! We believe that real learning happens when students are deeply engaged with the world around them. Our mission is to create a vibrant environment where children learn best by tackling real-world, authentic tasks, collaborating on interdisciplinary, research-based projects. Our teachers are their coaches and facilitators, empowering students to take responsibility for their own learning journeys.

We envision Lab Langban as a place brimming with optimism, excitement, and challenge every single day. Here, students and teachers see each day as a purposeful journey, where intellectual engagement and a strong connection to the outside world are our top priorities.

It's about much more than just books; it's about exploring the rich tapestry of cultures and perspectives that make our world so amazing. We're building bridges of understanding and respect, one inquiry at a time. Think of our students as international peacemakers and diplomats in training, learning to connect with people and communities near and far.

Our students aren't just absorbing information; they're actively questioning, investigating, and collaborating. We're equipping them with essential learning superpowers:

Inquiry Power: The ability to ask thoughtful questions and find meaningful answers.
Thinking Power: The skills to analyze, create, and solve real-world problems in their own circles and eventually further afield.

Communication Power: The confidence to share their ideas clearly in more than one language and listen to others with open hearts and minds.

Caring Power: The empathy to make a positive impact on their local community and, someday, far-off communities too.

We're not just building brains: we're building character, based on the IB Learner Profile. These attributes help us all become responsible members of local and global communities. IB students all over the world aspire to be:

Curious and courageous: Always eager to explore new ideas and take thoughtful risks!
Knowledgeable and kind: Understanding the complexities of the world around them and treating all people and the natural environment with respect!
Balanced and reflective: Taking care of their minds and bodies and learning from their experiences!
Yes, Lab Langban is a truly vibrant and engaging learning environment where every child feels valued, empowered, and inspired. We're nurturing a community of lifelong learners who are ready to make a difference in the world! So, let's celebrate the joy of learning, the power of inquiry, and the magic of an IB education!

Essentials of the PYP

The key components of the PYP framework are:

  • Knowledge: subjects organised in a transdisciplinary way.

  • Conceptual Understandings: learning through big organising ideas.

  • Skills: self-management, research, communication, social, thinking.

  • Action: purposeful response to inquiry that demonstrates understanding. It emphasises student agency and the ability to make a positive impact on the world.

Knowledge

There are six transdisciplinary themes students will investigate throughout the school year.

These themes are globally significant and cover concepts that are interconnected, can be addressed in all disciplines (subjects) and can be applied to real life.

  • Who We Are

  • Where We Are in Place and Time

  • How We Express Ourselves

  • How the World Works

  • How We Organise Ourselves

  • Sharing the Planet

Conceptual Understanding

There are seven key concepts that drive instructions through inquiry, questions, and investigation:

  • Form - What is it like?

  • Function - How does it work?

  • Causation - Why is it how it is?

  • Change - How is it transforming?

  • Connection - How is it linked to other things?

  • Perspective – What are the points of view?

  • Responsibility – What are our obligations?

Skills or 'Approaches to Learning'

There are five transdisciplinary skills and associated sub-skills students develop as they involve themselves in the learning environment:

  • Thinking Skills

  • Research Skills

  • Self-management Skills

  • Communication Skills

  • Social Skills

Action and Engagement

Students are encouraged to reflect, to make informed choices and to take action that will help their peers, school staff, and the wider community. These are student-initiated responses to what they are exploring and learning about themselves and the world in which they live.
